I suppose this fits better in announcements than anywhere else; it's not official or anything. I've modified the plugin so that it will use IPTC caption if it is set (otherwise reverts to the old default). Seems to work ok AFAICT. It would be great if this could be integrated into future releases.

what does automatic caption parsing do?
If you have embedded captions into your pictures, for example with Picasa, my modification makes it so that they will be 'parsed' (interpreted by the computer) automatically while making the gallery.xml. Before, the captions always defaulted to 'Show picture full size' and if you wanted to edit them you had to do it through the wordpress interface. I made it so that before uploading you can put in captions with whatever software you like.
For now, it only recognises IPTC captions; there is also XMP, and I'm sure adding support for that too wouldn't be too hard - but it wasn't necessary for what I wanted to get done. AFAIK IPTC is most widely used - it's certainly what Picasa uses.
my big problem with the sv gallery for wordpress is when you add new images to a gallery and recreate the gallery all the images disappear. my client has very little understanding of editing xml or anything like that. thanks for your reply
Looking at another thread you posted in, I assume you mean that the captions you entered are lost, rather than the images themselves? If you really mean that the images themselves are lost, I can't reproduce that here.
I see that Markus has said he'll work on preserving captions sometime. I might find a spare few moments to implement that myself... I still hope that my mod will make it into the official version, so that I don't need to keep patching any updates...
YES SORRY thats what i meant the captions all disappear. very frustrating for my client who is an artist and needs to update the galleries often. fingers crossed something will come up because the galleries are great. thanks g

I think this would be a fantastic addition to the plugin as at the moment this is it's major downfall. Anything I can help with? I'm still having the same issue with the captions!
I've implemented a fix for this. Quick test seems ok now. You can download it from the same link I posted earlier. Please LMK if this helps, or if you have any problems.
It loads up the old gallery.xml if present, and reads out any captions that are different from the current default caption. If such a caption exists, it will always be used; it won't bother to check for an IPTC caption or whatever. One slight thing to watch out for is that if you ever change your default caption and recreate a gallery which had a different default caption, then you will end up with the old default. I don't think this is probably a very major problem.
I just tried to use your modified version and it isn't working. For some reason, when I click on Tools > WP-Simpleviewer Galleries, the page is blank. I'm using Wordpress 2.8 - do you think that's why it isn't working?
